Know Your Chakras and How to Make Them Spin

The word chakra is Sanskrit for “wheel.” There are seven wheels or energy points in our bodies and each chakra has a distinct character and relates to different aspects of our being.

Our chakras are spinning away from the base of our spines to the crown of our heads, with each chakra relating to our body functions and our emotions.

So why is it important to get to know your chakras? A blockage in a chakra area can be the cause of physical or emotional tension or dis-ease in the body.

Muladhara or Root Chakra

Where is it? At the base of your spine

Emotional Issues: ungrounded, afraid, rage and anger, self-esteem issues, and security

Signs of an Unbalanced Root Chakra: Tiredness, poor sleep, lower back pain, sciatica, constipation, depression, obesity and eating disorders.

Signs of a Balanced Root Chakra: Feeling grounded, feeling centered, committed and independent, having energy and vitality, strength and stillness, able to digest foods well.

How to Get Your Root Chakra Spinning: Get grounded, lie in Savasana, connect with nature, swim in the sea, walk barefoot,  gardening , cooking healthy, hiking , hug a tree!

Svadhishthana or Sacral Chakra

Where is it? It`s about three inches below the navel, at the centre of your lower belly.

Emotional Issues: Irritability, shyness, guilt, blame, control, lack of creativity

Signs of an Unbalanced Sacral Chakra: Lower back pain, sciatica, decreased libido, pelvic pain, urinary problems, poor digestion, hormonal imbalances, menstrual problems.

Signs of a Balanced Sacral Chakra: Compassionate, friendly, intuitive, sexual, content, having a sense of belonging, fun

How to Get Your Sacral Chakra Spinning: Hip-opening yoga poses, be close to water, take baths, dip your feet in the ocean.

Manipura or Solar Plexus

Where is it? Above the navel and below the chest

Emotional Issues: Jealousy, shame, fear, ignorance, treachery, foolishness, envy, shame, delusion, disgust

Signs of an Unbalanced Solar Plexus: Diabetes, colon diseases, stomach ulcers, digestive problems, low blood pressure, pancreatic issues

Anahata or Heart Chakra

Where is it? It`s around your big beautiful heart.

Emotional Issues: Difficulty with love, compassion, confidence, sadness, envy, fear, jealousy, anger

Signs of an Unbalanced Heart Chakra: Upper back and shoulder problems, asthma, heart conditions, shallow breathing, lung problems

Signs of a Balanced Heart Chakra: Feeling complete and whole, compassionate, empathic, friendly, optimistic, motivated, nurturing, outgoing

How to Get your Heart Chakra Spinning: Kapalabhati breath, Cobra pose, be less judgmental towards yourself, treat yourself, rose petal baths and body creams, give more, practice random acts of kindness.

Vishuddha or Throat Chakra

Where is it? The centre of your neck, at your throat

Emotional Issues: Personal expression, speaking up, being heard, assertiveness, creativity, criticism

Signs of an Unbalanced Throat Chakra: Thyroid problems, sore throat, stiff neck, mouth ulcers, swollen glands, gum or tooth problems

Signs of a Balanced Throat Chakra: Clear communication, feeling calm, conscious listening, positive self-expression

How to Get Your Throat Chakra Spinning: Drink lots of water, eat fresh fruit, clear the air in your home, open windows, burn rosemary and jasmine oils, talk with your friends and try to be honest in everything you say, write your thoughts down, sing out loud!

Ajna or The Third-Eye Chakra

Where is it? Between your eyebrows

Emotional Issues: Confusion, fear of truth, discipline, lack of concentration

Signs of an Unbalanced Third Eye: Headaches, nightmares, eyestrain, learning disabilities

Signs of a Balanced Third Eye: Very intuitive, aware, possesses clarity, imaginative, has concentration and focus

Sahasrara or Crown Chakra

Where is it? At the top of your head

Emotional Issues: Lack of purpose, loss of identity, disbelief in any spiritual realities, trust, selflessness, sense of fear

Signs of an Unbalanced Crown Chakra: Chronic exhaustion, sensitivity to light and sound

Signs of a Balanced Crown Chakra: Feeling at one with yourself and nature, awareness, blissful, comfortable in your own skin, open-minded, calm and happy, thoughtful

How to Get Your Crown Chakra Spinning: Meditation, Tree and Eagle pose, nurturing your body with healthy food and lifestyle, rose oil, reading
