Yoga For Anxiety – Calm Your Mind, Body, And Soul

Anxiety | Health

As a health and wellness coach, I am often faced with clients struggling with anxiety. A deep feeling of worry, concern, or stress that can lead to severe discomfort is not all that uncommon. In college I experienced my first panic attack and had to go to the ER. Many times, a person struggling with anxiety is told to go on medication, but that is not always the best answer. Did you know that you could control anxiety through yoga too? Here’s what yoga for anxiety is all about.

Yoga For Anxiety Works Like A Natural Drug

There is a neurotransmitter in the human brain called GABA. Many anti-anxiety drugs actually work to increase GABA in the brain to make a person feel calm.  But there is something in yoga that increases GABA too! Pranayama is a part of yoga that uses specific exercises with the breath to influence the mind, nervous system, and the endocrine system.  With regular practice Pranayama will bring peace, a calm sense, and quell anxiety just as well as any drug.

Breathing To Calm The Body, Mind, And Soul

Just like drinking water, breathing is an important and rhythmic routine that is often forgotten. Do you ever stop and think about your breathing patterns? When a person is stressed, scared, angry, or excited they will take short, shallow quick breaths, and ultimately affect thought processes. Breathing like that can compromise mental and emotional balance. Therefore, breathing evenly as done in Pranayama is a fast and efficient way to calm the body, mind, and soul. It is also a source for energy, focus, and clarity.

By intensifying your yoga routine and practicing Pranayama you have the power to be in control of your anxiety in a way that is natural. With high breathing, low breathing, middle breathing, and complete breathing, as taught in Pranayama, you will learn to have strong breathing cycles and the brain will receive the routine amount of oxygen needed to be in charge of your battle with anxiety.
