The Question: Is There An Age Limit For Practicing Yoga? Martha L.
The Answer
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again and again and again: Anyone and everyone can practice yoga. It doesn’t matter who you are, how fat or how skinny, how strong or how weak, how young or how old.
I think yoga is a lot like other things in that once people reach a certain age, they think it’s too late and that they’re too old to start. If you really think about it, that’s really ridiculous. How could someone be too old (or on the other end of the spectrum, too young) to better his or her life? To become more mindful and at peace and more physically intelligent? Yoga, no matter the reason you practice, brings an entirely incredible quality to the lives of the people who practice it. In my opinion, you’re never too anything to begin to walk the path to a better life.
Additional Information
If you’re really nervous about practicing in a general yoga class, many studios offer specific classes for different groups of people. There are classes for men only, single women only, older people, children, etc. Of course, it makes more sense for a 70 year old woman who has never practiced yoga before to go to a class for seniors as opposed to an up beat and fast Vinyasa class for college students. Check with your local studio to find classes that you think would be best for you!
