What We Can Learn As Yogis From Emma Watson

I am sure by now you have heard all about Emma Watson’s speech on behalf of UN Women. If you haven’t, I suggest you go and look it up.

After I watched the video for the 12th time, I realized that there are things in this video that we can learn and apply to our every day life whether in our yoga, work or in social settings. Emma Watson is a certified yoga instructor and you can see her mindfulness in everything she does.

Here are some lessons we can learn from Emma and apply to our practice and our life.

1. It’s Okay To Be Afraid.

Emma Watson is a famous actress, yet you can tell by the way her voice shook, and the emotions that showed on her face, that she was afraid and/or nervous to give this speech. Nerves and fear come naturally in every day life, whether it is fear of taking your Crow pose to the next level, fear of speaking out about something you believe in, or a fear of losing someone close to you.

Fear is something we all live with and it tells us one very important thing about what we are about to do—we care. If you did not care deeply about whatever your fear is preventing you from doing, then you would not be afraid of it…it would not matter.

See your fears, recognize them and even though we’re not all famous like Emma, plough through them, stand up to them and don’t let it hold you back.

2. Support Is There To Help, And We Can Be More Powerful With It.

While I would like to think that I am a powerful individual on my own ( and I am), the truth is that the more people you have behind you, the more people you have pushing you to succeed, the more likely you are to complete what it is that you’re after. Think about yoga, even.

For some people (a lot of people), the community that comes with yoga is what helps to propel them forward. Aside from a sheer love of yoga, one of the reasons I continue to go to classes and work on my practice each and every week is because I have friends standing behind me when I go, I have a whole network of support helping complete my handstand, and most importantly, supporting me and challenging me to try again if I don’t.

We are strong, powerful beings on our own, but when we join forces with other people who share our passion we become an unstoppable, and relentless human race.

3. Be Mindful In Everything That You Do

With the internet, smartphones and other forms of instant technology, it is possible to catch people or to accidentally post something inappropriate for the world to see. It is important that we always act with the utmost respect for not only ourselves, but for the people around us.

Being mindful in your everyday life can help you to minimize the chances of this happening.

Just think about it; if you’re rude to someone at the supermarket because you had a bad day, they now have a poor impression of who you are as a person. The same goes if you post angry comments on social media and someone sees this without context.

We are privileged as people to have been given our own unique names and faces to mark the world with. If we are constantly doing things that are negative, hurtful or inappropriate, that is what we will be known for.

Emma Watson, is a woman who stands up for what she believes in, and she does it with dignity and with the utmost respect for herself and for the people who may not see things the way she does. Like famous people (maybe not as drastic), we too must be conscious of what we tie our name and our face to, because no matter how many people see your out-falling, someone will remember it.

Famous, average joe, or anyone in between, we all have something to learn from the way Emma Watson lives her life. Next time you hear her name in the media, think about how it affects her reputation, what fears she may have overcome to make that choice, and remind yourself that she needed support to reach her goal just like you and I often do.
