To find out more about why people in the DC Metro area love yoga so much, we reached out to some yoga studios to tell us more about the yoga community there, and what makes their studios special. Check out their responses below!

1. Yoga NoMa

What kind of yoga do you teach at Yoga NoMa?

While we offer a variety of classes taught by instructors with backgrounds of all kinds, our primary intention is to support accessible, all levels yoga, meditation, and dance.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

Yoga NoMa isn't trying to sell you anything. If we could, we'd give away this great practice, as we whole-heartedly believe everyone should be able to access the benefits of yoga and meditation.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

It's a funny, wonderful thing, but DC — despite its reputation for being a city of working stiffs — is actually one of the greatest, most honest, and dedicated communities of yogis I've experienced. The network of studios actually does work together to support this continually blossoming community.

What kind of yoga do you teach at Down Dog Yoga?

Primarily, old-school Baptiste Power Vinyasa.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

Down Dog Yoga was one of the very first studios opened in the DC metro region, and we have been at it for over 13 years now. We have an incredible, inspiring, and thriving community of yogis from all walks of life, and our teachers are some of the best in the country.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

Yes absolutely! The yoga community in DC is one of the largest and strongest in the nation.

3. Yoga Heights

What kind of yoga do you teach at Yoga Heights?

Yoga Heights offers an incredibly diversified schedule of classes. The range goes from Restorative Yin yoga and Sivananda, to Power yoga and Fusion Flow (a unique blend of yoga, martial arts and HIIT). We also have Pilates, Rocket yoga, Modern Dance, and a great beginners yoga track.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

Our studio is special because of our community. We wouldn't be what or where we are without our amazing students, studio assistants, and teachers. The approachable, affordable and accepting nature of our classes, teachers, staff and students makes Yoga Heights a yoga home for every body at every level and every budget.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

The DC Yoga Community keeps growing and getting stronger. You see students spending time at a variety of different studios as they explore their practice. Teachers often lead classes all over the city as well. We believe this helps fortify a unity in our community's commitment to helping people achieve a healthier, less stressful, and more balanced lifestyle in an otherwise rushed and busy metropolis.

4. Be Here Now Yoga & Wellness

What kind of yoga do you teach at Be Here Now Yoga?

At Be Here Now Yoga we teach many different styles and lineages of yoga including but not limited to: Dharma, Power, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Forrest, Yin, Gentle, Restorative, and Nidra. We also hold workshops on other types of yoga such as Kundalini, Kriya, and Acro yoga.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

At Be Here Now, we aim to facilitate building a community of practitioners who are receptive to discovering their personal truth. At the end of each class we remind all students that whether they attended as a drop-in, a member, or what have you, that they are a part of our community. The space is theirs. Ultimately, we aim to build a family that extends well beyond the walls of our studio where all are welcome with open arms and no conditions.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

Washington, DC has a vibrant yoga community with many amazing studios. Many of Be Here Now's instructors teach at other studios. However, day to day interactions between studios and studio management and owners is minimal. We believe there is enough yoga for everyone and are always open and receptive to working with other studios to expose people to yoga — a practice and way of life that impacted us profoundly.

5. Body & Brain

What kind of yoga do you teach at Body & Brain?

At Body & Brain we teach our own unique style of yoga. Our breathing and energy practices are based on East Asian healing philosophy and therefore, are much different than traditional Indian yoga. We do NOT emphasize holding traditional yoga postures like Downward Dog. Instead, we guide practitioners to control and accumulate energy through the breath.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

Right away as you step into one of our studios, you'll be able to feel a very different kind of bright, sparkling energy. It's the perfect environment to de-stress and calm your mind after a busy day at work or to kick start your morning with positive energy!

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

Yoga is such a highly popularized exercise these day,s that I feel everyone has tried some form of yoga at least once. With that kind of influence, yoga studios should work together to not only bring physical health to the people of the community but also to raise the emotional, and spiritual well-being of the constituents. Body & Brain has 11 centers in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and we work as a tight knit unit in this area to raise not only the physical health of our members, but also to raise the collective consciousness of our community.

6. Embrace Yoga

What kind of yoga do you teach at Embrace Yoga?

Embrace Yoga DC is a Vinyasa-inspired yoga studio that also offers an array of services to include Restorative yoga, meditation, and Yoga Nidra. In addition, we are also a teacher training studio.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

The thing that makes Embrace special, is that we are the only yoga studio that is multi-cultural and extremely diverse. People come from all walks of life, and all feel welcomed and comfortable practicing in this color and loving loft.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

Love is my only option! The DC yoga community has grown extremely fast over the past few years, and there are moments where studios have worked together beyond DC Yoga Week. We believe yoga is for all, and therefore we also collaborate with local and regional businesses that are not within the yoga community.

What kind of yoga do you teach at Yoga Del Sol?

At Yoga Del Sol, we practice a unique moving meditation drawing on ancient yogic techniques that focus on integrating the whole person — mind, body, soul. Breath guides every movement, challenging the body and mind in news ways, while incorporating meditative visualizations to improve overall strength, health, and vitality.

What do you feel makes your studio special?

We provide students with individualized attention and care, helping them find focus and challenge themselves in new ways. Many students have expressed that regular practice at Yoga Del Sol has brought about transformation in their lives, helping them feel rejuvenated, strong, and healthy. Additionally, the studio is a beautiful and calming escape from the busy lifestyle many students live.

With events such as the DC Yoga Week, do you feel that the yoga community in Washington is strong between different studios?

Having been in DC for nearly four years, Yoga Del Sol is delighted to be a part of the Washington-area yoga community. We’ve seen the community grow year by year, with new studios opening that offer various yoga styles, and master teachers visiting the area to lead specialized workshops.
