Living in New York City, I like to have a book with me at all times. You just never know when you’re going to get stuck underground on the subway and all of a sudden have some serious time to kill. Over the years, I’ve rapidly burned through a lot of titles this way, most of which – surprise, surprise – are dedicated to plant-based diets. Below are my top 5 must-read plant-based diet books that I recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the subject.
5. Yoga and Vegetarianism
Written by Sharon Gannon, co-founder of the esteemed Jivamukti Yoga School, Yoga and Vegetarianism delves into the spiritual practice of yoga and how vegetarianism fits into the equation. A must read for any yoga practitioner looking to deepen his or her spiritual practice. Buy >>
4. Forks Over Knives
Yes, there’s also a documentary, but I happened to really enjoy reading the book. Edited by Gene Stone with forewords by Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, the book explores the health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet and how making the switch could very well save our lives. Buy >>
3. Food Revolution
Food Revolution is written from the very unique perspective of John Robbins. Robbins, as in Baskin-Robbins, walked away from the family business and what could have been a life of luxury, all in the name of health and the environment. His story is inspiring and a must-read. Buy >>
2. Eating Animals
Jonathan Safran Foer’s first-hand account of his struggle with vegetarianism will make you both laugh and cry. It’s an entertaining read written in a fashion that everyone can relate to. Buy >>
1. The China Study
The research discussed in this plant-based diet book by Dr. T. Colin Campbell will blow your mind. That’s all I’m going to say. Buy >>
