I started my yoga practice in college. At the time I was a nursing major and there was an instructor who was certified in yoga. She would lead classes to help with our stress levels, and my friends and I would go. I kept up with yoga well through my senior year and there on after.
It has been about seven years since I've started a yoga practice. It has flourished well beyond what I began with, not only in a physical sense, but a great spiritual sense as well. However, it wasn't until my discovery of the social yoga community in 2011, that I realized what a movement we all were a part of.
How Social Media Expands Our Yoga Practice
As a social media marketer, I am biased to the great things social can give us. My number one love of social is the hashtag. The yoga community connects on such a fun and intimate level through the use of hashtags.
Through these fun phrases we can learn what each other is doing and connect globally with one thing in mind, yoga.
My favorite hashtag currently is #stopdropandyoga. I love #stopdropandyoga because it is so in the moment fun. When someone tags you to do such a thing, you literally have to stop and get into your favorite asana, upload your photo, and share!
This hashtag lets us take a break to breathe and pose: a moment to bring it all back to one’s self and then share the love through a growing community…which brings me to my second part…
Social Media and the Yoga Community
…Community! Yoga wants us to come together as one and learn from each other, and what better way to do that than through social?
With this hashtag we're exploring, engaging with one another, and becoming one to develop a community of like-minded, positive people. Incorporating our yoga practice into our social lives is a beautiful thing in which we can learn from one another and expand our minds to our practice.
Yoga with friends is the best, and our practice will thrive when we find that energy to keep us motivated and going! So what are you waiting for?! Join the movement. I challenge all of you to #stopdropandyoga and tag a friend. Let's keep the party flowing.
