Every year we convince ourselves how we need to ‘freshen’ up. This usually results in loveless commitments to lose a couple pounds or accomplish some feat we believe will make us a better / stronger / cooler person. (Spoiler alert: Neither of these things effectively changes our relationship with ourself but I digress…)
What if this year we didn’t commit to fixing anything? This year, I propose we remember that we are all still students. I propose we commit to furthering our development, instead of worrying about our ass. I propose we open ourselves up to inspiration in the teachings around us! (Yes, I’m imploring you to read!)
Below are a few of my beloved books that always freshen my mind…
1) When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron
If you have not encountered Pema Chodron yet, let this be the one promise you make to yourself this year. You will not regret it. (I promise!!) Pema Chodron has a way of making spirituality both accessible and lovingly necessary.
2) Eastern Body, Western Mind by Anodea Judith
Want to energetically contextualize your throbbing back or achy hip? This is the book for you! Eastern Body, Western Mind helps make the chakra system accessible to those of us weaned on traditional allopathic medicine. Learn the underlying energies the your body dialogues in and how to most holistically take care!
3) Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Confession: I owned this book for a few years before I read it because I was so judgemental about the title. (Yes, I can be *a bit* of a shit at times…) Then, I read it. And re-read it. And re-read it. Elizabeth Gilbert has the unique ability to make friends with humanity and suffering. Her book will fill you up with acceptance and hope.
4) The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar
If you are craving a ‘yogic’ text, this is a great one to hang out with! It is not overly tedious yet leaves the reader with a chewing on the philosophical underpinning of yoga. Asana is presented as a tool, and the importance of tradition within the system of yoga is celebrated.
